ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Visual artists are invited to exhibit two-dimensional work in Weertz Hall. The exhibits are available for viewing when the building is open.
Since childhood I have appreciated the texture, shine and energy of mosaic art. The water-like quality of glass together with the infinite world of color seems to me to be a joyous combination.
The mosaics in this exhibit are some of what I refer to as my “experiments” since taking a Mosaic Making class at the Des Moines Art Center several years ago. I’m a healthcare professional and can boast of only a small dose of formal art education. However, I was fortunate to have been born into a loving family, both nuclear and extended, who exuberantly appreciated the vast beauty of God’s creation and the importance of the Arts. The mosaics in the exhibit were all inspired by the wonders of grasses, flowers, leaves, trees, water, sky and stars.
An incidental advantage in working with this medium is that, for me, a broken dish or vase is not a loss, but rather an opportunity!
