St. John's Lutheran Church

In the City for Good!

St. John's Lutheran Church participates in God's mission to bless, save, restore and reconcile the world through meaningful worship and faithful witness in the city of Des Moines and around the world.

St. John's Lutheran Church invites and welcomes all people to experience the Good News of God's grace, forgiveness and unfailing love. The Good News calls and empowers us to share God's love in word and deed throughout our city, nation and world.

Interfaith Hospitality Network

St. John’s serves as a support congregation in the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), an organization that enlists congregations to provide food and shelter for families in transition.

Since 2004, 14 churches in the Des Moines area have provided overnight housing, one week per quarter, for 3-4 families (up to 14 people).  These host congregations transport their guests to the church in the early evening, provide dinner and hospitality during the evening hours and overnight hosts in case of emergencies.  (The families in transition spend the daytime hours at work, school, or the IHN Day Center at Westminster Presbyterian Church.)

As a support congregation, St. John’s provides the evening meal, evening and overnight hosting for two of the evenings that Windsor Heights Lutheran Church houses families through IHN.   As our week to provide support approaches (once per quarter), you may volunteer to provide food or serve as a  host by signing up on the IHN clipboard in the narthex.  Questions regarding this opportunity to serve may be directed to Jennifer at
