St. John's Lutheran Church participates in God's mission to bless, save, restore and reconcile the world through meaningful worship and faithful witness in the city of Des Moines and around the world.

St. John's Lutheran Church invites and welcomes all people to experience the Good News of God's grace, forgiveness and unfailing love. The Good News calls and empowers us to share God's love in word and deed throughout our city, nation and world.

Celebration of International Peace Day

“On the Threshold of a New Day” is the theme of the celebration, a phrase at the heart of a speech given by Coretta Scott King at a peace rally just months after Dr. King’s murder.  Continuing the Faith Committee’s commitment to observing the last year of Dr. King’s life—so given to peacemaking—the service will include a reenactment of the speech given by Mrs. King in NYC in 1968.  We will raise our prayers and strengthen our resolve to end war, and insist that “War is not the answer.”

The event, organized by Des Moines Faith Committee for Peace, takes place at the Peace Garden in Cowles Commons, 221 Walnut Street, on Thursday, Sept. 21. Service begins at 6:30.
