Parent Volunteer needs
Parents, you are an important part of youth ministry at St. John’s! The programs and opportunities we offer would be impossible without your support. It takes a village! Below is a list of all the ways you can help. Please consider sharing your gifts.
YMAC stands for the Youth Ministry Advisory Committee. We like to have at least one parent from each class (6-12). We encourage 2 year terms or longer (there is a lot of flexibility). YMAC usually meets on the first Monday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00.
Mentors are an essential part of our confirmation programming. Long after the 3rd article of the Apostles Creed has disappeared from memory our young people will continue to carry with them the meaningful relationships they formed with those adults who sat beside them in confirmation. As a mentor you get to meet young people and learn alongside them. How is being a mentor different from participating in class as a parent? Mentors commit to a more regular attendance and are also equipped to help lead activities during class time.
Many of our summer trips and camp opportunities would be impossible without fundraising. Each year we try to raise between $15,000 and $20,000 to offset costs. Does this challenge sound exciting to you? We would love to have your help! Below are specific fundraisers you can help with.
- Youth Auction: The auction is by far our largest fundraiser, and it usually takes place around the last weekend in February. In recent years we have raised close to $14,000 through generous donations of all sizes and shapes. The auction is an "all hands on deck" sort of event, and when January comes we will let you know how you can help. Additionally, we are always in need of parents to volunteer on the planning team. We normally meet about 5 to 6 times beginning in early December.
- Plant Sale: We need at least one volunteer each year to coordinate plant sale details. This volunteer will work with Central Iowa Floral, the youth director, and our financial staff. The time frame is March through the first weekend in May.
Every summer we take week-long trips with our confirmation and high school youth. We often need adult leaders to join us. Do you have experience with camps, mission trips, or outdoor ministry? Do you wish you had experience? We invite you to think about joining us!
Sometimes a car breaks down or someone gets sick and we’re short an adult leader. It’s important to have someone who we can call. If you have a flexible schedule and enjoy a little surprise every now and then, this could be the role for you!
