oW wOw mEow Brings Surreal Puppetry Spectacle “Let Them Eat Melon” to Des Moines

Des Moines, IA — On Friday, June 5, audiences are invited into a wildly imaginative evening of puppetry, music, and absurdist performance as oW wOw mEow presents Let Them Eat Melon at St. John’s Lutheran Church as part of St. John's Fine Arts Performance Series. .

An evening of puppetry and foolery, Let Them Eat Melon blends anti-folk music, experimental theater, oversized puppets, and interactive storytelling into a surreal live experience. The New York City-based duo consists of pompom pirate and cornbread jimmy sweet.

Pompom pirate is an herbalist, therapist, and clown described as a “schizoanimist with a heart of gold,” while cornbread jimmy sweet is a sculptor, puppeteer, and experimental performer whose work “shocks people out of their everyday lives and transports them into a world of frog phones and mutant giants riding motorcycles.”

Their performances fuse absurdist musical punk theater with immersive visual worlds and audience interaction, creating moments that are hilarious, grotesque, heartfelt, and unforgettable.

Let Them Eat Melon is described as:

“A puppet show inside a watermelon, inside a stomach, inside of an anti-folk music show.”

Through music and puppetry, the show explores themes of microbial ecosystems, health autonomy, death and decay, and the interconnectedness of bodies, ecology, and politics. The performance examines how “the worlds inside us connect us to the worlds beyond us,” creating stories that are equal parts bizarre and beautiful.

The event begins at 7:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. Doors will close at 7:15pm. Performances will take place on the church’s third floor. Guests should enter through the alley entrance commonly used for weddings. The venue is ADA accessible with elevator access available off Watson Powell Jr. Way.

A $10 suggested donation is encouraged, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

oW wOw mEow will be joined by several Iowa puppet artists for a collaborative evening full of laughter, music, and strange wonder.Joining oW wOw mEow for the evening are local Iowa performers:
